"Catch and Kill is a gripping techno-thriller that picks up from where Biohack left off. Lasica explores and works through the possible evil twists and turns that abuse of future technologies can produce and wraps it all around a truly tough kickass hero – Kaden never disappoints.

Cleverly disguised as fast-paced read that reveals the genie is already out of the bottle - it caused me to continue pondering what could be and what shouldn’t be in the use of technology and inspires me to want to keep a close watch at who is developing what types of technology. Both books are thoroughly provocative, enjoyable and a must read!"

Catch and Kill A hightech conspiracy thriller Shadow Operatives Book 2 edition by JD Lasica Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

  • Lasica brings Kaden Baker back in the second take of what portends to be a fascinating series. He brings an intriguing mashup - the art of the possible meets the dreams of the probable in a book filled with action, intrigue and scientific wonder. Lasica's deep interest in technology shines through as he brings AR, VR and AI to life in a relatable and, more importantly believable context. Personally, I'll be watching firvthe next episode in Kaden's saga to drop.

While I had the pleasure of reading an advance copy, Lasica is a key author and I buy/keep all his books in my library.
  • Two things
    1) Entertainment this fast moving techno-thriller will have you ripping through the pages (or swiping, as it were!) If you are looking for that fast reading, "what happens next" experience, pick up the book now.

    2) Uh Oh Ever wonder about the dark sides of technology? If you haven't, consider that some of the things Lassica writes about are not a stretch of the imagination. See, even reading a novel you can slow down and chew on thoughtful, tough subjects. Consider not only the tech implications, but the sort of bloody, violent world this novel conjures. Can books inspire us to do better in our real world? Let's hope so! The world is not split neatly into good and evil.
  • It was a lot of fun reading this book. (No spoilers here.) Lasica builds on the themes of clandestine out-of-control mentally-whacked rich guys using technology to further their goals of world domination; deep state, undercover, off-the-books government spooks; a heroic orphan who was adopted and then betrayed by a relative; kidnapped young women on a dead-end trip bound for disaster; and a heroine who survives victoriously, yet is shadowed by doubts that threaten to take her down. The tech in the story is well thought out and leaves you wondering how close we are to some of this. And wondering whether you should cancel that scheduled visit to The Big Theme Park next month. Written in that mystery style where there are several threads going on all the time, coming together late in the story in a satisfying chase scene with twists and turns, and a climactic denoument at the end. This story places well up there among the thrillers, mysteries and sci-fi I've read in the last couple of years!
  • I read this book when the author had it priced at zero. I am glad to be able to read this sequel to Biohack, apparently no matter what you may have read elsewhere.

This is definitely a sequel. Having read and reviewed BioHack (available on Unlimited), I know a bit about what's going on. I really think reading the first book is necessary to really understand what's going on.

Jaden is back, along with her fellow hackers from B Collective. There are a few newcomers in the mix. Most notably Amelia, the best hacker of all.

After a botched kidnapping attempt during which Kaden suffered a life-changing loss, B Collective wondered if it was related to The Disappearance. One day in America when girls, ages 16 to 19 disappeared off the streets, or in several instances, by being forced into a van. No one really knows how many girls Disappeared. There's a good reason B Collective wondered.

Jaden is on the chase for the man who ruined her life. She is so focused on chasing him, she pays no attention. Until all of a sudden her chasing has turned into a two pronged attack.

People she trusts turn traitor, people she doesn't know have shocking news, and she goes off a cliff - twice.

    WARNING Cliff Hanger
  • JD Lasica has written a timely novel with cyber skills, political intrigue, and action. A classic thriller with modern twists, it's a compelling read from beginning to end.
  • Catch and Kill is a gripping techno-thriller that picks up from where Biohack left off.

Both books are thoroughly provocative, enjoyable and a must read!
  • Continuing what clearly will be an ongoing series, Lasica has written another great near-future thriller which as a fan of science fiction and a technologist writes believably about where tech is going in the not too distant future - whether it is software or biology. It is not an easy read in parts, diving deep in the not always pleasant ways some technology may be used to manipulate and influence people as well as to give form to our darkest desires and fantasies. As the second book in a series while this could stand on its own, it is definitely building upon the worldbuilding of the previous book in the series and clearly is setting up for the next book - a book I'm looking forward to reading.

I had the fortunate opportunity to read Catch and Kill in an early version and to give Lasica some feedback about the book ahead of the final publication, upon buying the final edition I was pleased to see that his changes from the early version I had read had tightened the story and strengthened it.
  • Our AI always-connected near-future may be unsettling indeed. Catch and Kill builds on Lasica's previous Biohack and shows, that despite its promise, the dark side of technology can be Orwellian and scary. This is a thriller that asks the implied question Where is this technology going and who will control it?

It's fast-paced, quite believable, with more than a few plot twists. I look forward to the next volume in the series.

Bonus points for a seemingly innocuous IoT device playing a crucial role.)

Between the World and Me TaNehisi Coates 8601423687360 Books Reviews

  • I'm white, male, and have very little understanding or appreciation for black culture. My parents and siblings all watched Roots when I was about 8 years old. I encountered some black sailors when I was in the U.S. Navy - in fact, I had a roommate for six months or so that was a black male, but we maybe spoke a hundred words during that time. This book came recommended by a quasi-stranger, not for it's content but for its structure letters from a father to a son. I'd mentioned that I was interested in writing that sort of book, and this was a resulting recommendation. I read a few reviews before buying it. Not the sort of book I'd otherwise pick up. After ordering it, I heard the author on NPR - without knowing it was the author of the book, mind you - and I thought "wow, this guy is really interesting, provocative, well-spoken, intellectually sound, and speaks from a world that I can only see from afar." So when the show host said his name, I knew I had to pick up the book and read it soon. I had that opportunity within days, on a flight to Atlanta, my first visit there in maybe fifteen years. I got through about 110 pages on the flight and it was perfect timing. Atlanta is a sea of black compared to most everywhere I've lived. Instantly, I could try and appreciate my surroundings in way that I'd never been able to before. Did I feel "white guilt"? Sure. I do. I've seen racism my whole life, especially toward black. This book, however, did much more than rekindle strong feelings of being a winner of Powerball proportions in the life lottery. It challenged me so fundamentally and starkly in a way that I have never been challenged, reading a book, in my life. At times I felt compelled to put the book down, that it was just conjuring up too much weight of history that I wanted to put back out of sight. But I kept going. Finishing it, I felt, like apparently many others do, that this should be required reading for every American. Even those outside of the USA will benefit from it, as it will certainly illuminate the tension and schizophrenia and contradictions and rewritten history of our country. I hope Mr. Coates continues writing until he draws his final breath.
  • Like many of the one- and two- star reviewers of this book, I bristled at certain passages in Between the World and Me. I felt attacked and blamed at times, because I, in Ta-Nehisi Coates' words, "believe that I am white." So I understand the scorn directed at this book by many who dismiss it as divisive and simplistic in its assessment of the black experience in America.

But here's the thing this book isn't about me. It's not trying to tell me what I should do to be a better person or make me feel guilty about things I don't even understand, much less control. It's not trying to fix anything. And if you're reading it that way, I think you're missing a profound experience.

I've never been shown and made to understood the experience of a life so unlike my own as I have with this book. I felt the frustration and fear that Mr. Coates felt growing up black in America. I felt the anger he feels at people who believe that they are white dismissing that experience as so many sour grapes. I felt the hypocrisy of being told not to wear hoodies or play loud music for fear of someone breaking your body.

That's why this book matters. It's not a solution to our race problems or an accurate assessment of the progress of America as a nation. It is not a book about white people and how we should change. It is simply a powerful testament of one man's experience, and an offering of understanding.

I grew up rich, white and privileged in suburban Virginia. I never had to think about my safety, my future or my pride through the lens of my race. I couldn't even begin to conceive of that experience. Ta-Nehisi Coates is the first person to break through that reality of my upbringing and allow me to step into another experience for a little while.

    It was life-changing and important.
  • I read this book today in one sitting. I do not think I could easily describe exactly what it is, but I'll try. This is a book black people need to read. This is a book white people need to read. This is a book that anyone who calls themselves "American" needs to read. This is a book that writers need to read. This is a book that describes the history of our nation and -- in a way -- the history of the world. This is a book that tells one man's story of how he achieved his social consciousness the impact that had on how he viewed himself.

Coates uses his youth, his journey into manhood, his personal tragedies and his struggle to find his voice as a writer as a vehicle to reflect on what it means to be a black male in America. The book is crafted as a letter to his son, making it a more intimate and personal journey. That intimacy and humanization extends beyond Coates to the victims and survivors of racism. Coates forces to you reflect on the individuality, potential and preciousness of every life impacted by the Middle Passage, Bloody Sunday or killer cops.

He is not optimistic, but he's not a cynic, either. I was worried that this book would leave me feeling sad, angry, hurt. Instead, I feel strangely proud. He sees where we fail as a nation, but points out how black people have and will continue to survive as a people. And he calls on those who have benefited from America's systemic racism to do better or face their own future downfall.

To sum it up, Toni Morrison describes this book best "This is required reading."

The Last Battleground The Civil War Comes to North Carolina Philip Gerard 9781469649566 Books Reviews

  • I’ve just begun this book but I can tell I’m going to truly enjoy reading it. The first few chapters are absolutely terrific. I’ve read many books on the Civil War but this is the first book to just slap me in the face with the reality of the devastation to people’s lives wrought by that conflict. Highly recommended.
  • A wonderful piece of writing. For anybody interested in the Civil War and its impact on North Carolina (not to mention elsewhere in the US), this is a must read. Written in the present tense...it will bring you back in time.
  • Novelist Philip Gerard applies the storyteller's craft to portraits of people in the Civil War -- not just the presidents and generals but ordinary folks, black and white, men and women. Incredibly detailed; a page-turner.
  • I received an ebook copy of this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have been reading books on the Civil War for almost 50 years and have read everything from general overviews of the war to specialized niche books focusing on a single battle or a specific regiment or company, memoirs, and pretty much everything in between.

This is one of the better works I've had the pleasure of reading. It nicely balances the competing requirements of being somewhat scholarly and effectively researched while at the same time the desire to pull the reader in and along with a compelling narrative.

Philip Gerard covers a lot of ground here and touches on major topics (i.e., the actions of NC troops at Gettysburg and Sherman's march through the state) and also the personal (the effect of the war on individuals and their families, like the Bennitts, who have the distinction of having their home serve as the location of the surrender of Johnson's army to Sherman in the western theater of the war). Major topics (journalism's coverage of the war and the enlistment of Negro soldiers) are covered both broadly and with a focus on individuals.

Virtually every facet of the war is covered. I hadn't realized the prominence of North Carolinians in the Civil War. Prior to this, what I chiefly knew was the large amount of Unionist sentiment in NC, the primary port for blockade runners bringing in goods past the Union blockade and the speed and skill with which Sherman's army and his pioneers moved through the swamps on corduroy roads. NC had a hand in ironclads, the southern privateers preying on Union merchant ships and was also an important center for rails.

In short, it's an informative and fascinating read and I recommend it highly for anyone interested in the Civil War beyond the basics. Well worth reading.
  • Philip Gerard may not be a professional historian of the war, as he mentions in the introduction, but he writes with the confidence of a veteran of the craft; his newness to the topic parlays into a strength instead of a weakness. This is a fantastic book, easily one of the best books I have read on the war in some time. I like the fact that each chapter stands alone, and elucidates a different aspect of the war as it relates to North Carolina. The topics range widely, from medicine to music, from slavery to journalism, from privateers to foot soldiers. Every chapter is fascinating, even those I initially thought I wouldn’t have much interest in. In addition, the fact that it is written in the present tense adds a sense of relevance and involvement to what is going on. I really can’t say enough good things about this book. The prose is delightful, the stories are engaging, and the overall result is a triumph of the highest order.
  • I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

What a fascinating read! Because the book began as a series of single articles that were then put together, there's an excellent synthesis of both macro- and micro-history of the Civil War in North Carolina. The author has done an excellent job of really bringing each small moment to life and through them, painting an excellent picture of the end of the war in North Carolina. Additionally, because the format began as small articles, each chapter is really easy to read on its own, a great coffee-table read for history-buffs. The material is great for those interested in learning more, but there's enough new details and tales that even Civil War buffs will learn something new. I would highly recommend for anyone remotely interested in the Civil War!

Because I just finished creating a Civil War in Raleigh Trolley Tour, I found this book to be immensely helpful in understanding the broader importance of North Carolina in the Civil War as well. You won't go wrong with this book.

    • As a psychotherapist I needed a light weight schedule book planner with pleanty of room for notes and reminders. I liked this planner as it is uplifting and the cover is beautiful.
    • I love this planner. It makes me think about me and plan "me" in the month. I recommend this planner for anyone who has a busy schedule and need a little help planning your day and month. I loved it so much I purchase two of these ( one for me one for my daughter) and the one with stars for a friend. Get planner for the price.
    • Ordered for my mother because she needed her appointments broken up into 30 minute increments, and she said it was exactly what she needed. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is because I wish it were a hardcover.
    • Love this planner! Easy to use, easy to read and just the right amount of space for side notes and tasks
    • Exactly as pictured and exactly what I wanted!
    • Very good planner
    • I received this as a gift last week and just started using it. I love the space and the prompts. It’s a GREAT deal for the price. I will likely get one for next year as well. Only think I’ve noticed so far is the pictured typo.
