The Leadership Challenge by James Kouzes and Barry Posner takes a close look at the factors that contribute to strong leadership in a variety of fields. In their research, Kouzes and Posner found that there are five practices that leaders commonly list as key to moments when they were effective leaders. Central to every leader’s success is credibility, which is related to the characteristics that followers seek in their leaders. These include honesty, a focus on the long term, competence, and the ability to inspire others.

Instaread’s Summary, Analysis & Review of this book gives an excellent overview and discusses in detail twelve takeaways. This little summary is like a Cliff Notes for book buyers. It can be read in less than 15 minutes, and gives a comprehensive look inside the book. There is also a brief description of the authors’ style and their perspectives on leadership. At the end of the book is a list of references for further reading on the subject.
If you’re looking for help in choosing among the many self-help books available, this should be your go-to resource.
I received a free copy of this book. - In reading this summary, I was happy to find some principles of leadership that totally fit with my perception of what a leader should be. First, I agree that a leader must be credible. I think one needs look no further than the current elections to see the problems with leaders that do not have any credibility. Another major leadership factor is leading by example. I cannot express how much I agree with this statement. Example is everything! Next, a leader must give his followers a vision of what is to come. In my mind, if there is no map of where we are going, then why follow? The last principle that really rang true to me was a leader needs to encourage and reinforce optimism on the team. How true is this? Can you imagine having a downer on the team that is pulling everyone away from the leader’s vision. Yuck! All in all, I found some basic principles of leadership espoused here that would be useful to anyone new to leadership. These ideas are presented in a short summary that is easy to digest and assimilate. Great stuff!
