The ESRI Guide to GIS Analysis, Volume 1 demonstrates how geographic analysis with GIS can identify patterns, relationships, and trends that lead to better decision making. Using examples from various industries, this book focuses on six of the most common geographic analysis tasks mapping where things are, mapping the most and least, mapping density, finding what is inside, finding what is nearby, and mapping what has changed. Written for both new and experienced GIS users, this book builds a foundation of the basic tasks needed to handle a wide range of analysis applications.

"I found this book difficult to read (literally - the pages/print was too reflective) and the graphics/illustrations were tiny. Not sure why they even bothered. It is a pretty book, but not very useful, has lots of unused white space which makes the tiny illustrations even more frustrating. Just get the tutorial, it is more helpful (not much more helpful). Honestly, I found more help/information re:GIS online, for free."

  • I found this book difficult to read (literally - the pages/print was too reflective) and the graphics/illustrations were tiny. Not sure why they even bothered. • Some ESRI books are only extended marketing brochures. This is not. If you need a book that will help you understand GIS analysis, this is a great place. Mastering the techniques described in this book will cover 75% of the demands in the market. The book is referenced and so if you need more you can seek out the sources used to write the book.

This book is for GIS analysts, not for folks interested in building databases. This is an essential reference for GIS analysts. that is heavily booked marked and sits on the self near my desk so I can refer to it. It is useful for people starting out and experienced GIS users.

It is weak on network analysis and remote sensing. So look elsewhere for that.
  • Even though the book is a little bit old its still a good read to understand the basics of GIS.
  • Good book for school.
  • great resource
  • This book is very basic, but it was intended to be. It is very well written and well organized. I'd recommend it as an intro. Even tho it is an ESRI book, it does not give specific instructions on how to do any tasks using ESRI products... also by design.
  • I used this book in college and loaned it to someone started a job using GIS and had to get it again. Very valuable book very well organized information
  • With GIS being all the rage - this is a great book to further knowledge. this is one of 2 that go with the Tutorial Vol 2. If you have some experience with ARC - you will love this book. VERY Reasonably priced!!
