Helen Murray White fell in love with Mexico when she and her husband visited Mexico City in 1968. Now, forty-seven years later, they are still coming to Mexico, sometimes driving, sometimes flying. Influenced by the desirable climate and local beauty they bought a house in 2008 at Lake Chapala and now divide their time between the United States and Mexico. They have seen many changes in Mexico, but some things never change. The people are still warm and friendly, always ready to share what they have. Mexicans have a saying, “If guests come and there aren’t enough beans, just add a little more water to the pot.” “Watch Out For Topes,” is a memoir about the couple’s travels across Mexico. Each short story contains nuggets of information about Mexican culture, showing the joy of living in this colorful, diverse country. The title, “Watch Out for Topes” has a double meaning. It cautions drivers to be alert and observant, be ready to stop or make quick changes, and slow down. Following that advice will make our lives happier.

  • The author writes with clarity and makes the reader feel present with the Whites on their decades long trek of Mexico. The read is pleasing and great for those wishing to experience Mexico whether going in person or through the eyes and heart of the writer. Especially of note is the relationship experienced with the people of Mexico. I reccomend the book strongly for both entertainment and information. Floyd Barnhill

Thanks to the author for an enjoyable reading experience.
  • I loved it! I've been to Mexico several times and this book makes me want to go back. It is obvious that the author has a great love for the country of Mexico and its people. It is a quick, fun and informative read.
  • White’s writing is rich with detail and captures the joy she has experienced living at Lake Chapala and developing close relationships with many of her Mexican friends. She shares many of the aspects of Mexican life which endear her to this community, but she does not ignore the difficulties of adjusting to another culture. Her commentary includes many anecdotes about the beautiful spirit and generosity of her Mexican neighbors. She also makes it clear that living in this country requires an acceptance of different customs and occasional “surprises,”which can be disconcerting. The book includes large segments describing the many fiestas celebrated in the community, trips “never seen in guidebooks,” and the preparation and enjoyment of the many types of Mexican food she has enjoyed over the years.
  • It really gives a feel of each area and is so fun to read. Just the right balance of facts and personal experience to get someone interested in exploring this fabulous country
